We’re big fans of all elements of design over here at Print Express, from web design to packaging to print – but we’re also big fans of anything creative, and that includes photography. One thing that I’ve especially been interested in of late is night photography. Photography is all about “painting with light”, and so creating images during darkness adds a whole new dimension to the challenge. It’s a great opportunity to show off vibrant, bright lighting – the difference between a shot of a lit-up bridge at night versus in the day is stark, and the mood and feel of the image will be heavily changed.
Black and white night photography is also incredibly beautiful (and challenging), and for me it’s something that I’m trying to get better at. It’s all about contrast – getting the bright light of a streetlamp contrasted with the sharp black of night is something that can work really well and create a very moody, atmospheric photograph. Of course, my skills aren’t quite there yet, but I find looking at beautifully crafted night photography shots helps to give me inspiration and helps me better understand what great composition and post-effects can do for an image.
So, without further ado, I wanted to bring together a collection of some of my favourite recent night photography shots – each one taken by a very skilled photographer. If you know of any other great night-time shots that you think deserve a mention, and particularly if you’ve shot any of your own, then I’d love to hear about them in the comments below.
Hopefully you’ve found this showcase of night photography to be a source of inspiration, and that it’s gotten you thinking about composition and lighting techniques that you can apply to your own photography (I know it has for me). I for one am definitely keen on trying out more black and white night-time shots. As always, if you know of any other great examples out there – or if you’ve taken any photographs that you think should be included – I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
