Today, I wanted to explore something a little unusual – ampersand design. This might sound a bit odd, but ampersands are my favourite symbol. When you really start digging into the design of them, they’re an incredibly unusual shape and that lends itself incredibly well to beautiful, interesting and unexpected typography. It’s also something that other designers have picked up on, and one of the best things about them is how they can turn an otherwise corporate and perhaps clinical logo into something with personality and elegance.
Ampersands appear frequently throughout design – from logos to posters, postcards and more, ampersands can add a certain something to a piece of artwork. And it’s amazing just how varied this single character can be – from stern, bold ampersands to a swirly, hand-drawn flourish, ampersand designs can be remarkably different and can encompass a broad variety of tones.
Today, I wanted to showcase some of my favourite ampersand logos and designs. Each of these has been meticulously crafted by brilliant typographers, and one thing that I really wanted to highlight is the sheer variety of them. From incredible bursts of colour and vibrancy to thin, minimalist ampersand designs, I wanted to showcase how enormously different each one can be. So, without further ado, here are some of my recent favourite ampersand designs and logos.
Hopefully you’ve found this showcase of ampersand logos and designs to be a useful source of inspiration. If you’re working on a logo (or a poster, or illustration, or any piece of art) that makes use of an ampersand and you want to add a creative twist to it, this showcase should hopefully give you a head start. And if you do go ahead and create an ampersand design that you’re proud of, we’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
