When looking for design inspiration, I often find myself looking at completely unexpected things. Sometimes I’ll explore and find myself looking at the design of concept cars, or creative street art or movie posters – anything where creative art and design meet. And one thing that I’ve been looking at recently – and where you may not necessarily expect there to be a following for art – is in playing card design.
When you think of a playing card, the chances are you’re thinking of the standard design. But there’s actually a huge love amongst many designers to reinvent the humble playing card design and instead transform each card (particularly, I have to say, the Ace of Spades and the face cards) into something quirk, creative and unexpected.
For anyone that’s looking to redesign the playing card, it can be a fun exercise and it’s a truly intriguing challenge to take something that’s so well known and has so much history behind it, and redesign it to have a new, fun and fresh take. And if you then go so far as to print your designs, it can be incredibly rewarding to then hold your finished creation, and perhaps even play a few games with the deck.
Today, I wanted to showcase some of my favourite recent discoveries, and show off some amazing work from some incredibly talented artists, designers and illustrators. I hope you find this collection of redesigned playing cards to be interesting and, as always, if you know of any others that deserve a special mention, I’d love to hear about them in the comments at the end of this post.
I hope you’ve found this roundup of creative, imaginative and unusual playing card designs to be interesting. Maybe it’s even given you the encouragement to get cracking with your own playing card redesigns. If you know of a deck of redesigned playing cards (and especially if you’ve created your own), we’d love to hear from you!
