Over here at DESIGN, we tend to spend a lot of our time talking about things like illustration and graphic design, but one area that I’m particularly fascinated by is photography – and on top of that, black and white photography. Today, I wanted to explore black and white landscape photography, as it can completely change the tone of a scene. The convention is that black and white photography is actually much harder than you’d expect, and I’ve certainly found this to be true. Instead of making a photo interesting and visually rich through the use of colour, you instead have to make use of contrast – ideally the sharp and jarring break between pure black and pure white, although of course there’s no hard and fast rule to this.
I personally find looking at interesting black and white landscapes helps to improve my own photography, and so I wanted to bring together a collection of my recent favourites. These are all beautiful examples of photography that I wanted to share, and I’ve provided links to the photographer’s Flickr page for each one so you can find more of their work. I hope you find this showcase of black and white photography as interesting as I do, and if you’ve got any other examples that you’d like to share, I’d love to hear about them in the comments below.
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed this roundup of black and white landscape photography as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together. I know that it’s given me that itch to switch my camera mode to black and white and get some landscape shots. If you know of any other brilliant examples of black and white photography that you’d like to share, we’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
